Sustainability & Innovation

Fuelling the future with British-made pea protein, shaping a more sustainable tomorrow for food manufacturers and consumers alike.

Why Are We Focused on Saving the Planet?

At Novo Farina, we see plant-based innovation as a vital step towards protecting our planet’s finite resources.

By championing pea protein over traditional meat sources, we help reduce carbon emissions, water consumption and land use—particularly important in a world where every litre of water and hectare of farmland counts. Peas are an incredibly sustainable crop: they naturally fix nitrogen in the soil, minimising the need for fertilisers, and are well-suited to rotations that preserve soil health.

Our mission is simple: to create a healthier, greener future, one pulse-based meal at a time. We collaborate with partners, suppliers and customers who share this vision, working to push the food industry towards cleaner, more ethical production models.

Sustainable Sourcing

The journey starts at home, with yellow peas grown across Norfolk and Suffolk.

By prioritising British crops, we cut down on transport miles, boost traceability and support local farming communities. Where needed, we rely on responsibly sourced European pea protein isolate, ensuring we keep food miles low without compromising on rigorous quality standards or regulatory compliance.

This approach also helps reduce dependency on imported proteins such as soya, reinforcing UK food security and offering food manufacturers a reliable supply of plant-based ingredients. It’s all part of a circular approach: sourcing locally, investing in our agricultural communities and safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Production Practices

Our on-site facilities and processes meet the AA+ grade certification against the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety—proof of our commitment to quality and safety.

From harvest through to milling and packaging, we adhere to strict operating principles that limit waste, monitor energy usage and maintain consistent standards. As a young business scaling up, we’ve pledged to measure and manage our carbon emissions over the next two years, continuously searching for ways to reduce our environmental impact.

By embracing responsible production, we offer businesses and consumers the chance to make food choices that nourish both people and the planet. It’s an ongoing journey, but every improvement in our practices brings us one step closer to a truly sustainable food industry.

Norse Catering Case Study

Norse Catering recently put our Texturised Pea Protein (Pea Mince) to the test by replacing 10g of beef mince in 205 servings of bolognese.

This small yet significant swap resulted in a CO2e reduction of 74kg, improved water quality by saving 12,607 litres, and preserved 4.11m² of biodiversity. It’s a shining example of how pea protein can help the food sector tackle pressing environmental challenges head-on, showing that even modest ingredient adjustments can yield remarkable sustainability gains.
